Nintendo Switch 2 as a Microcosm reflection of Brexit and USA Tariffs
Still trying to figure out what makes posts do better than others... as what does really well is fscking wild and seems random AF. All of this stuff is a mixture of stupid and crazy... and honestly it does not surprise me. However, navigating it is... uh... well... all of you are really fscking stupid
So, it is no surprise that the same people screaming at Nintendo for a Switch 2 are now the people screaming at Nintendo for making a Switch 2
Most of the people mad about the Switch 2 are a mixture of people getting their information from LLM generated "news" sources. Or people who just don't understand how basic things work. Be it issues with understanding economics, or lacking basic tech literacy
Placing Nintendo Switch 2 as a Microcosm reflection of Brexit and USA Tariffs
Let's start off with the big one
No, it has not been confirmed that _ALL_ Carts will do anything
"People keep doing the same stupid behaviour, and expecting it to not get the same stupid results" -- Book of Ketchup Recipes: the companion reader to Frigyth The Grumpy's Musings Before Ketchup, Sidhe Summer University, Unseelie Printing,
Sure, yes, a good chunk of carts will just be a license key that says it is okay to download the game onto your SD Card. Wasting a storage slot to operate as a fancy dongle
That doesn't mean _ALL_ of them will do that
In fact, all it will take is somebody going, "wait, we can use doing the basic minimum of using a storage medium for storage as a selling point" and you will have at least some of the carts going against this. At the very least some carts claiming they are going against this
Since the Switch 2 is somewhat backwards compatible with the Switch, this means that they cannot stop the cartridge port from having data storage being a feature from it
Most they can do is limit the data storage coming in from that port being a serial number or activation key. Which... is something that is exploitable AF
There is nothing stopping people from using the cartridge slot as a serial port. Hooking up an Audiono with GPIO from a system via the cartridge slot
So, any statement saying _ALL_ of the carts will be A SINGLE THING is obvious fscking hoax nonsense that it is ridiculous that this is going to get spread insanely
Heck, Nintendo Did Not Invent Physical Media Tied to a System
"You know, maybe the reason people's memories are so short is because time is a flat circle. I mean, why bother remembering stuff, when you are just going to be reminded moments later?"-- Frigyth The Grumpy, Musings Before KetchupSo here is a major thing. This "destroying Physical Media" thing is not a new thing to Physical Media. It has been with Physical Media since the 90s. Heck there are even _some_ prototypes in the 80s where a device is tied to another device upon being used in that device. Though, the earliest examples of this being an element of physical media of device pairing/tying being a practical feature mostly only dates back to the 90s for being "standard part of physical media collection since the 1900s"
This is important to note, as this means WE ALREADY HAVE WAYS AROUND THIS
Yes, it is annoying. This is why it is generally only a feature of products for a couple months before it gets completely dropped
But this is just another part of how the Physical Media is Inhernetly Superior Crowd are fscking stupid jackenapes who are easily swayed by jangling keys in front of their faces
Having a piece of plastic in your hand, is not really any different than having a bunch of 1s and 0s on a device somewhere. In fact, in this case, it is completely the same thing, as the stuff you care about is the 1s and 0s, not the bit of molded plastic in your hand
Honestly, BluRay is a media to avoid, for a very similar reason. As all it takes is one firmware update, and now your machine will not recognise ANY of your BluRays except for a small amount of "okayed BluRays". This part of how that medium was set up is the main reason I avoid wasting my time with BluRays
The Activation Keys for boxed games on Steam in the 00s followed a similar notion/idea. With this being replicated with several other PC Gaming platforms over and over since then
My Digimon Digivice has something going on with all the different tabs I can load into my Digimon
And again... there have been ways to get around this addition to getting physical media to run since the 1900s
But hey... the people who were screaming for a Switch 2 being mad about the Switch 2 are not particularly good at thinking. Only being angry villagers with pitchforks and torches
The Price Increase Was Highly Predictable, You Morons
"Other people need resources in order to exist? But I want things from them!" -- Common Chant
Probably the biggest way this works as a microcosm of the same thinking that brought you the USA Tariffs and Brexit is how they are all shocked at the increase in price
Let's start off by listing the two most expensive parts of Nintendo Online for the Network Admins. "Game Save Backups" and "Voice/Video Chat"--both of which were things that were VERY LOUDLY being asked for by the exact same people upset about Nintendo charge a surprisingly low amount of money for what you are getting
The Maths of Why Nintendo is Getting Ripped off by Remote Save Backups
"Honestly, surprised nobody has noted this when talking about RedDeer Software's nOS software in Switch's eShop. I mean, sure RedDeer Software's nOS doesn't do a particularly good job of doing anything (not just with this)... but like this could be brought up" -- Johnathan Wernstrum, Business Blogs for Success
So, here is the thing... each game on the first Switch series can have a maximum of 128GiB of game save data. Yes, some games look like they can have variable sizes of save game data... but ultimately, due to how the backing up and recovery of this data works, the upper limit is ~128GiB
This means, within ten games, you have a single account using ~1TiB of cloud save backups
Each Nintendo Switch has a C Programmer Disease style upper limit of being able to load up 1000 games onto it. While I doubt anybody has gone to the upper extremes to have a single Switch storing 1PiT in remote save game data, there are plenty of people already having their accounts tied to several Terrabytes of save game backups
Having several Terrabytes of data being backed up for ~15$/mon is actually Nintendo losing money on that end of things
Rest assured, there ARE Network Admins at Nintendo annoyed at a subset of "power" users. Who are telling the people paying for the remote data centres that "if you want to be playing with super power, you need to start paying for super power"
Sure, are there some people who barely get past 50GiB of save game data backup? Prolly... but the Switch has been out for nearly a decade. If you even just casually play that system over a decade, you are going to end up with your save game data being more measurable in fractions of a TiB by the end of it. Or at least if you are regularly playing Switch games on your Switch
Let's Not Repeat Flip Notes Studios Controveries Please?
"The Mascot of Flip Notes Studios might as well be a white Ford Econoline" -- Vincent Chadwick Thundersexsmith, Hero of Legend
Okay, so, so many people have been upset at Nintendo for their lack of Voice Chat over the last couple decades. Now Nintendo has that, and they are upset at a resulting price hike that honestly, seems a bit small for how much the moderation for such a thing would end up costing
Every version of Flip Notes Studios has had some form of controversy with creepy old douche bags trying to get with small children
The ONLY game in that is technically in that series that has not had a confirmed controversy over people misusing it for terrible ideas is Picto-Chat and even _then_ there is no end to urban legends of people misusing Picto-Chat
So Nintendo adds in a version of Omeagle/ChatRoulette into their services mixed with the XBox 360 CoD Lobby, as VERY LOUDLY DEMANDED BY THE SAME PEOPLE COMPLAINING ABOUT THE PRICE INCREASE
Nintendo is going to need moderation for that stuff. Even if we were in a world that operated on a pre-2016 political environment, _NINTENDO_ would still want to have a moderation team running such an addition to their stuff
I don't even want a Switch 2 over the addition of voice chat. However, the notion that Nintendo Online would increase how much they are asking for, should have been one of the most expected moves made
Honestly, I'm going to have to assume the voice/video chat is going to be less properly moderated than Miiverse due to how low the price hike actually was when they added it
Oh, and for an example of why Miiverse _needed_ moderation, people have worked to re-add it as functionality to people's jail broken 3DS and WiiU systems via third party servers. That stuff makes the attempts to revive Club Penguin look like Emerald Musk's Twitter. Oh right... do not go to third party run Club Penguin servers if you are a tween. Not just tween girls... tween boys are not safe there either. Say what you will about Emerald Musk's Twitter, you don't see people doing SA for Tween Boys on there. The bar is at the bottom of the Mariana's Trench
Unless your third party Miiverse server is being run on your own personal home server, you do _NOT_ want to return its functionality to your 3DS and WiiU
Like, we literally have _TWO_ recent examples of why Nintendo is going to have to get an army of moderation staff for these features being added. Those being Club Penguin third party servers and Miiverse third party servers
This is even without bringing up Omeagle, Chatroulette, Emerald Musk's Twitter, Kik, old era Reddit, 00s era XBox Live or the various ImageBoards, for pointing out that Nintendo's price hike is not only completely expected--everybody should feel angry about all the people asking for voice/video chat on the new Nintendo device
Nintendo did not need this new functionality... and nothing of value is being added. If anything, it is going to be a major selling point when this functionality is removed from the system
I mean, yes, I did enjoy the highly moderated version of Miiverse... but at the same time, I'm completely fine with it not being there. If it was never there, I'm fairly certain people would be all screaming about Nintendo making it. Because people aren't good at understanding basic cause and effect
Future Exploits To Look Forward To In Nintendo
"Oh boy! Oh boy!" -- Anonymous
So, there are a few things to look forward to people attempting with Nintendo Switch 2
The big one is breaking down how the activation key system works on the Nintendo Switch 2
See, with the Nintendo Switch 1, you had the various cards that allowed you to download a product from the server. However, much like the gift cards, the various PoS systems at places selling them had to activate them with Nintendo before you could use those codes on your system
Are the carts with Nintendo Switch 2 just the same thing, except instead the activation number is inside the cartridge, with the scanner barcode on every game's packaging having to be unique?
If that is the case, you are going to see at least one recall where every cart inside its package was off by one from the package's barcode it was made with. Yes, with gift card systems we have that worked out. Gift Card Systems do not base their stuff on game cards. That, and this issue has happened with every dongle system attempted prior to now
How long until we see news stories of people not able to play their games because the Dongle is not attached to the system? As this is the main thing that has stopped other companies from continuing to use dongles
We then have the question of how long until a system update makes it so specific runs of Dongles no longer have games being registered on the system?
Keep in mind, all the problems are, at worst "annoyances"... as what Nintendo is doing here has been a thing companies have been doing since the 1900s. With most companies just deciding it isn't worth doing afterwards (the others just don't exist afterwards). Ways around this issue have been well established since the 1900s
Is it a good thing to do? No. Is it something worth getting all angry and go all villager mobs with pitchforks and torches? Also no
Honestly, the issue with people either being "all the anger" or "none of the anger" is probably more triffling. As it seems that unless something is the biggest deal ever, if cannot be taken into account. Which results in a bunch of molehills being made into mountains... and then those issues being disregarded, on account of them being molehills made up as mountains
Molehills still fscking suck
You should not think you can only be angry about mountains
If you want to get rid of a molehill, making into a mountain is the greatest way to keep having that molehill. Which is terrible, because molehills fscking suck. We need to stop with the "either a mountain or it is flat" mentality of approaching problems. Twelve Molehills do not equal One Mountain--because that is a dumb approach to thinking about stuff, on accounts of it being inherently flaws as a philosophy
At the same time, anytime somebody does it, you NEED TO POINT OUT THEY ARE STUPID FOR DOING IT--as otherwise that Molehill will never ever actually be dealt with in any real way. Due entirely to it being scaled as a bigger problem than it is--despite it being able to be a problem
If Nintendo does not require PoS systems to register a game key as having been bought with their servers, we then run into a new fun issue of people just guessing key activations
This is going to be an issue you will see happen as having servers tied with key card activations going forward... is people mapping out what key cards have already been activated, guessing what ones will _soon_ be activated and trying to generate them within the time frame of the purchase happening, and the product being used on the system
We already have systems that can guess when a book was published based upon the ISBN. Guessing when a CD or Vinyl was published based upon the checkout Bar Code. You know, on top of people having decoded the yellow ink watermark system in Printers
We have systems that can game when Telephone numbers are being rotated about, that are based upon having less information than any other system mentioned here
Heck, the Printer system being broken into being less viewed as shady, is largely due to the Big Companies being so extremely shady, that reverse engineering printers to remove the abilities to stop The Crimes(TM) from happening with them, seems like something that you'd do as a Heroic Hero
Most systems on doing secure protocols have the various ways that a security system can be exploited in how the standard is written down. As it is impossible to have things hardened to a 100%
So there is a _LARGE_ amount of ways to break Nintendo's Activation Code system, which is at risk of being made normalised to the same level breaking into Printers to know the yellow ink dot code systems (which means, spoofing the yellow ink dot code systems) due to how many different online services are trying to use this stuff to ensure people are not pirating their material
It should be noted that GoG and Steam have some VERY lax views on how to handle Piracy... and they are also the platforms that when something is on them, you see far less Piracy occur for that stuff. There is plenty of ways to get games that will remove them if they show up on GoG--and most people will just think you are the worst if you ARE trying to pirate them
This is even during times GoG has updated their policies to become complete dog garbage
A lot of what Nintendo is selling with their Switch 2 is going to be dropped within a year of it being released. Just based upon noticing that history is a flat circle
Other stuff will take a bit longer
And a lot of stuff people are currently being loud and stupid about (and the exact same people very loudly being stupid about demanding Nintendo do this stuff) is going to be fixed and used as a sales point
Think about how the 2DS was sold as "not having the 3D feature". In fact the reason I own an n2DSXL, is BECAUSE IT DOES NOT HAVE THAT DUMB DOG WATER RUBBISH NONSENSE ON THAT DEVICE. "Oh but why would you own that system without the 3d screen"... oh I dunno, because I'm not amused by people jangling keys in my face, you dumb cretin!

People Keep Making The Same Dumb Mistakes
"Time is a flat circle" -- Some git who hasn't even been born yet
Part of the reason we keep seeing the same dumb mistakes happening over and over again... is because people keep looking at the consequences of actions, as oppose to the _BEHAVIOURS_ that lead up to said actions
Honestly, the fact that Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is a thing, is so fscking wild to me. Obviously, this is not a thing people generally do naturally. To me the sort of stuff described within it is the sort of stuff most people with baby-brains should be able to just accidentally wander into doing in their day to day actions
It is the methodologies you use to determine stuff that is the problem
You, apparently, can just keep having the same terrible results happen, and not think that maybe your philosophy or approach is wrong
This is why I tell people that I do have a super-power. It is the ability to learn from my mistakes and change my behaviours in order to be more effective. AS NOBODY ELSE ON THE PLANET SEEMS FSCKING CAPABLE OF DOING THAT!
It is a mindset that values Results and Aesthetics, over Actions and Methodology
The mistake is often not a specific action... but the behaviour and mindset that resulted in said action being committed. As that specific action _can_ be useful in some contexts... you just have to make certain you _ARE_ dealing with a square hole here
